چکیده

Article history: Received: 15 June 2011 Accepted: 25 Aug 2011 Available online: 29 Dec 2011 Background: The P75 neurotrophin receptor (p75) is a transmembrane protein that binds the nerve growth factor (NGF) and implements multiple functions in the nervous system. It is expressed widely during the development of the nervous system although its expression is dramatically decreased at adulthood. Though the P75 neurotrophin receptor has been identified more than 35 years ago, our knowledge about its structure and function has barely increased. Materials and Methods: In this review various methods are used to search databases and reliable scientific resources have been reviewed to give an up-to-date panoramic picture of the protein expression, structure, function, and its interaction with other known molecules. Results: P75 not only in neurons but also in various types of glial cells is expressed. In addition to NGF, this receptor can also bind the tropomyosin kinase receptors. Some pathological conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases and nerve damages are followed by the considerable increased expression of p75. Conclusion: In this study, the role of p75 in the nervous system of human beings has been investigated and it has been illustrated that how spinal cord repair can improve by blocking of p75. It seems that in addition to p75, someother homologues are also involved in this pathway. Further studies are required to elucidate more details about the role of p75 in the development and function of the nervous system. Copyright © 2012 Zahedan University of Medical Sciences. Blockade of p75 Neurotrophin Receptor Reverses Irritability and Anxiety-Related Behaviors in a Rat Model of Status Epilepticus

Background: Many recent epidemiological studies have shown that epileptic patients are more likely suffer from depression, anxiety, and irritability. However, the cellular mechanisms of epilepsy-induced psychotic behaviors are not fully elucidated. Neurotrophin receptors have been suggested to be involved in epilepsy and also in psychiatric disorders. Up-regulation of p75NTR expression and acti...

A novel inhibitor of p75-neurotrophin receptor improves functional outcomes in two models of traumatic brain injury

The p75 neurotrophin receptor is important in multiple physiological actions including neuronal survival and neurite outgrowth during development, and after central nervous system injury. We have discovered a novel piperazine-derived compound, EVT901, which interferes with p75 neurotrophin receptor oligomerization through direct interaction with the first cysteine-rich domain of the extracellul...

Glucose homeostasis and p75NTR

The p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75), a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily, was originally identified as a receptor for neurotrophins and is expressed in the nervous system and in many non-neuronal tissues such as white adipose tissue (WAT), skeletal muscle and liver. Although the biological functions of p75 in the nervous system have been extensively studied, the mu...

The Effect of Resistance Training Along with Royal Jelly Supplementation on Expression of Nerve Growth Factor and Tyrosine Kinase A Receptor in the Hippocampal Tissue of Alzheimer's Rats

Introduction: Current study aimed to investigate the effects of resistance training (RT) along with royal jelly (RJ) supplementation on hippocampal expression of nerve growth factor (proNGF) and p75 receptor in a rat’s model of Alzheimer's disease.  Method: 42 male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with Trimethyltin chloride (8 mg/kg). Then, the rats were randomly divided into seven equal group...

The Extracellular Domain of Neurotrophin Receptor p75 as a Candidate Biomarker for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Objective biomarkers for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis would facilitate the discovery of new treatments. The common neurotrophin receptor p75 is up regulated and the extracellular domain cleaved from injured neurons and peripheral glia in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We have tested the hypothesis that urinary levels of extracellular neurotrophin receptor p75 serve as a biomarker for both huma...
